FTOROSAN — OXYGEN CARRYING PERFLUOROCHEMICAL PLASMA SUBSTITUTE

The necessity of creating blood substitute — an oxygen carrier, is dictated on the one hand by the requirements of blood in large quantities and limited possibilities of its storing on the other hand. At present, intensive investigations of such kind are being conducted in the USSR, Japan and USA in two directions (O.K.Gavrilov et al., 1982): utilization of different hemoglobin preparations and creation of «synthetic blood» on the basis of perfluorochemicals (PFCs). The most advanced are the works on creation of «synthetic blood» on the basis of PFC emulsion.

«Synthetic blood», has a number of advantages, over donor blood: the possibility of production in unlimited amounts and long-term storing; no problems related with incompatibility; no danger of immunologic conflict and transmission of virus hepatitis.

In 1979 «The Green Cross Corporation» in Osaka (Japan) produced «Fluosol-DA» which since 1978 has been used for treatment of more than 500 patients.

In the USSR the creation of «synthetic blood» became possible due to successful works of Academician I.L.Knunyants and his co-workers in the chemistry of perfluorochemicals. In 1979 at the Institute of Biological Physics (Director — Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences G.R.Ivanitsky) in collaboration with the All-Union Research Institute of Technology of Blood Substitutes and Hormonal Preparations (Director — prof. P.M.Kochergin) the compounding, and the technique were developed for obtaining pilot batches of home-made blood substitute based on PFC emulsion named «Ftorosan». For a number of years «Ftorosan» has been thoroughly investigated at the Institute of Biological Physics the USSR Academy of Sciences, at the Department of Children Surgery (Chief-Academician Yu.P.Isakov) of the Second Moscow Medical Institute, at the A.V.Vishnevsky Surgery Institute, Acad. Med. Sci. USSR (Director — Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences M.I.Kuzin), at the Chief Military Hospital (Headed by N.L.Krylov), at the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Surgery (Director Prof. G.D.Ioseliani) of the Ministry of Public Health of Georgian SSR, at the Department of Patological Anatomy (Head — Prof. A.M.Golubev) of Lunacharsky State Medical Institute in Astrakhan.
